Last time on Derek's life:

So it's been about a month since I last posted. I am going to making this a two parter with part 1 talking about this last month.

Its been a long month but very good for me. I spent it working hard, though making less money then I would like. The work was hard and sucked, but it felt good to push my body. It is also a beautiful part of the country with nothing to do. Working did also make it hard to talk to people back home. I was working during Ontario's evening and when I got home, everyone was already sleeping.

As I stated last post, my job was working in the vineyard as as a stripper. Every year, all vineyards need to be pruned, stripped, wrapped, wire dropped, wire lifted twice, and harvested. (I'm sure I missed a few steps.) This is all on top of maintaining the vineyards ( not all are maintained well which makes it harder for us seasonal workers) and installing new vineyards. The vineyards are everywhere, including the sides of some of the mountains.

This gave some great views to look at. My favourite was Oyster Bay Vineyard. It is right on the coast by Cloudy Bay.

Due to the silt in a to be that joins the ocean. The bay is always dirty, you can therefore get a colour gradient in the ocean.

By the end of my month, my boss gave Petr ( a Czech coworker I got along well with) and I the opportunity to work at Oyster Bay for a week and a half. I helped the farm manager do some maintenance work around the vineyard. This included removing broken poles and replacing them, adding nails to the poles at the end of each row, and  starting the wire dropping. I made less money hourly then stripping, but it was a nice change.

I also ended up bending the pry bar.

Beyond working, I have tried to find some enjoyment. Unfortunately I took more small videos then pictures but will see what uploads.

During my trip to Blenheim, I met Ramesh, an Indian from Austria. We ended rooming together for a few nights. He was a little intense but an interesting fellow. Though his main job is as an arbourist, he also cooks and taught me a few things. He also liked to talk to people in the kitchen and got a bunch of us to have a pot luck together.

I also was invited to an open mike night at the Yard Bar where a Korean coworker wanted to preform. It was a quiet night but fun sharing drinks with some people.

My roommate and other hostel people also fish in the ocean frequently. Though I haven't joined them for that, I joined them on day to go to the beach. We went to Whites Bay. It was a great beach following a nice drive through the mountains. Water was very cold and the sand flies were horrid. I am just getting over the itching two weeks later.

Beyond that, I haven't joined them on the weekend going to the bar, but would sit around with them drinking, talking, watching a movie, or doing a puzzle or game.  We went the one afternoon to watch the McGregor vs. Fairweather fight.

It's been a good month but I am ready to be done. I've also spent more money than i earned because of this.....
